It takes a true artisan to handcraft a wine like the Cabernet blend from Bella Union. With a nose full of our vineyards' signature notes of exuberant plum and black cherry, the supple tannins lend a luscious body that while velvety today, provide a framework for the kind of Cabernet blend that will age beautifully.
The 2017 vintage opens up with luscious aromas of cherry cola, anise, and baking spices. Fruit forward and yet well-restrained, notes of black cherry, blueberry, and other briary fruit dance through the lush, bright midpalate. The finish lingers on notes of cocoa, with beautifully resolved tannins.
Founded by the partners of Far Niente, Bella Union is named for the historic country road now known as Bella Oaks Lane, along which our cornerstone 25-acre Rutherford vineyard is situated.
Bella Union is dedicated to the art of perfecting the Cabernet blend – a longstanding tradition of Old-World winemaking. Our cornerstone vineyard is planted primarily with 20- to 30-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines that thrive in the region's well-draining loamy soil. Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petite Verdot are the timeless, classic varietals sourced from select Napa Valley vineyards that round out and complete the blend.
For our 2017 vintage, a temperate spring gave an ideal start to the vines as they flowered and approached fruit set. The warm summer followed by an early September heat spike helped to accelerate fruit growth, with the cooler end of September allowing for even ripening and additional hangtime on the vine, to further develop and accentuate flavors.
